Over the past couple of years we have seen an increase in the number of performing arts centres being built in the Independent School sector across the South East. One of these buildings, known as The Birley Centre, was handed over by our main contracting team last year to Eastbourne College and we are delighted to announce that it recently won a Sussex Heritage Award in the Public Community Category. The Judging panel commented about the building:
“It is a very high standard commensurate with a generous budget.
A difficult constrained site was used very intelligently to maximum
effect. We thought the facilities being open to the public was
commendable reflected by the two entrances.”
The Birley Centre provides the pupils of Eastbourne College and the local community with a state-of-the-art performance and practice centre for budding musicians. Facilities include a 300 seat auditorium with stage area, practice rooms, drum rooms, a recording studio, individual and group classrooms and offices.
The professional team involved in the project were Miller Bourne Architects and FT Allen.
